Frequently Asked Questions

About i-Race

What is i-Race?

i-Race is the Indian Institute of Technology's iconic running race. It is conducted thrice a year, in March, August and December.

What is unique about it?

The race is conducted in many cities and even countries around the world simultaneously. Every runner competes against all others, not just in his city but also against others around the globe. In that sense, it is all one race.

How can that be?

The race computers use a complex and sophisticated mathematical model to adjust every runner's performance to compensate for the performance change expected due to age, gender (male / female), height, weight and the race distances in different cities. Thus, any two runners can be compared, making it one big global race.

How are the winners decided?

The race computers calculate the theoretically best times achievable by each runner given the inputs of age, gender, height, weight and the race distance. This time will be a percentage of the actual finish time of the runner. The runner who scores closest to 100%, and thus comes closest to his predicted best, is the winner.

Participating in an i-Race

Who can participate?

The race is open to everyone. In certain cities, due to the official constraints, the race is open to limited number of runners. Kindly check the i-Race information for your city of interest.

We insist that the runners, who are not physically fit or are untrained, check with their physicians before undertaking the strenuous activity such as racing.

Youngsters (less than 7 years) cannot be ranked as the model does not account for ages below 7 years but they are definitely welcome to participate.

When are the upcoming i-Races?

The nearest i-Race is on Sunday 1st August 2010 and then, another in December 2010.

Where are the upcoming i-Races?

August 2010 i-Races will be held in Mumbai, Pune, and Portland (Oregon, USA). More cities will be added to list as we get confirmation from various city organisers. Keep checking this site for additions of more cities.

What is the race distance?

Different cities have somewhat different distances, based on the scenic routes available in the local area. Typically, the distances are between 5 to 10 km (3 to 6 miles). This is to accommodate casual runners (shorter distances), and more serious runners (longer routes).

What prizes can be won this time?

The race is meant to promote fun and fitness, with a quirky tinge. The prizes, therefore, are a token part of the experience and involve no cash awards.

How do I register?

The registration can be done through this website. However, we are not accepting payment through the net. Please bring the money at the time of pre-race measurements of weight and height. Depending on the city, you will have different timings for these measurements.

What is the registration cost?

Each city will have different amount based on the local logistics of the race. Typically, these costs vary in the range of Rs 100 to Rs 300 depending on the country and the city. Youngsters (below 12 years age) get a discount. Check the individual i-Race section.

What does the registration fee cover?

The registration cost goes towards the logistics of the race, your bib number, water and other support during race, and light refreshments after the race.

When do I get my bib (chest number)?

You have to visit the designated location in your town before the race as mentioned in the individual i-Race section. In some cities, because of logistical reasons, you may be requested to visit the location the day before to collect the bib.

Can I send a representative earlier to collect my bib and pay the fees?

We cannot measure your height and weight if you send a representative! If the measurements day is before the actual race day, and you cannot come personally that time, we will hand over the bib to your representative. However, on the race day, you will have to report at the starting point very early for the measurements. The details are in the individual i-Race section. Such measurements will be stopped 15 min before the race to allow time for entering data into the race computers.

Do I need to carry any identification?

Any photo ID will suffice to ensure that you are the same person who registered.

What is the race reporting time?

The details are in the individual i-Race section.

Will there be parking facilities at the start?

Usually, the parking facilities will be near the start but at a distance of few hundred meters from the start. Contact your city's race director for more details. Allow a few minutes to reach the start on foot. There will be no provision to transport you to the starting line from the parking facility.

Will there be baggage check-in facility?

Currently, no. In future, as the number of runners increase, we will definitely arrange such facility. If you still want to keep some baggage for storage, request your city's race director. But even if the race director acquiesces, please do not keep any significant amount of money and valuables in your baggage.

What other facilities will I get at the start of the race?

At the start of the race, the race director will provide water and toilet facilities.

What facilities will I get during the race?

The details are in the individual i-Race section.

What do I get at the end of the race?

The details are in the individual i-Race section.

When can I know my rankings?

The race results will be posted on the site within 2-5 days of the last i-Race around the world getting over.

Organising an i-Race

I can't participate. Can I volunteer?

Sure. Please contact the race director for your city listed on the Contact Us page.

My city is not listed in your i-Race cities list. Can we organize an i-Race in our city?

Yes. Please see the section on Types of i-Race below.

What will I need to do to arrange an i-Race in our city?

To start with, you can hold an affiliate i-Race. This race needs only a few runners and no strict administration problems. You do not have to provide accurate race markings, exact weight & heights of runners and precise finish timings. You do not have to feed the finish time data into the central race computers. In that sense, this becomes more of a fun run in your city. The downside is that your runners do not get to qualify for the prizes (if any) and global rankings in the final results. Once your city has the experience of an i-Race, you can participate in the next episode of the i-Race as a full-fledged city i-Race or Certified i-Race.

Types of i-Races

There are three types of i-Races. Certified, Affiliate and Solo. The differences are explained below. In the Aug-2010 i-Race, Mumbai, Pune and Portland i-Races are Certified i-Races.

Certified i-Race

What is a Certified i-Race?

A Certified i-Race is a formally organized i-Race at any location that is open for any individual. These races have accurately measured courses, formal protocol for registration, height and weight measurements and recording finish times. The results of these races official and so count for the global prizes.

How can I participate?

If there is an i-Race available in a city of your choice, you are welcome to participate in it. You can get individual race details in the Registration page. Contact the relevant City i-Race Director for further information.

How can I organize one?

If there is no i-Race in your area and you would like to organize one, get in touch with the Global i-Race Director.

Organising a certified i-Race involves the following:

1.       Deciding two routes of approximately 5 and 10 km OR one route of 7.5 km

2.       Deciding race start timings;

3.       Taking requisite permissions from all authorities;

4.       Announcing and publicizing the event in the local runners’ community and / or media;

5.       Pre-Race activities: Collecting registration fees, giving chest numbers, taking runners’ weight and height measurements;

6.       Arranging medical support for the race;

7.       Intra-Race responsibilities: water and sports drinks stations, check-points, finish time recordings;

8.       Feeding data into global i-Race database;

9.       Annoucing and publicizing race results;

10.   Issuing certificates and prizes to winners.

Affiliate i-Race

What is an Affliliate i-Race?

An affiliate i-Race is an informally organized i-Race at any location that may or may not be open for any individual. It could be arranged by a group of runners for themselves or kept open for others, too. These races will have no registration fees. The courses need not be accurately measured. The course distances, weight, height and finish times of runners will be taken optionally, depending on the local co-ordinators’ decision. Since these data are recorded on an Honours Code basis, the results of these races unofficial and so will not count for the global prizes.

How can I participate?

If there is an affiliate i-Race available in a place of your choice, you are welcome to participate in it. You can check individual race details in the Registration page. Contact the relevant City i-Race Director for further information.

Solo i-Race

What is a Solo i-Race?

A Solo i-Race is when a runner anywhere in the world wants to participate but has no one else to run against locally. Alternatively, the runner may not want to go through the hassles of arranging any race, even for an informal group of friends.

Such runner runs on the course, at the time of his / her choice. The runner sends the data about his / her age, race distance, height, weight, and finish time on an Honours Code basis. The results of these races are unofficial and so will not count for the global prizes.

How can I participate?

Just decide on a nice route near your place, between 5 and 10 km. If you inform of your exact route, we can help you measure it remotely through Google Maps™. Enjoy the run and record your finish time. Enter the relevant data on an Honours Code basis. You will need to inform us at least 2 days before the actual race day that you are going to do a Solo i-Race.
